What is Mouth Cancer?
Mouth Cancer, also known as oral cancer, develops in the tissues of the mouth, lips, tongue, gums, and throat. It is a serious condition that can be life-threatening if not detected and treated early.
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Tobacco use: Smoking or chewing tobacco can raise the risk of mouth cancer.
- Heavy alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol regularly and or combining it with tobacco use will raise the risk of mouth cancer.
- Sun exposure: If you are exposed in the sun for a long time, make sure to wear lip protection.
- Age: Mouth cancer is much more common in people over the age of 40.
What Happens During a Dental Oral Cancer Screening?
- Visual inspection: Your dentist will examine your mouth, lips tongue, gums, throat and even the roof and floor of your mouth.
- Physical examination: Your dentist may also feel your neck, jaw, or under your chin to check for swollen lymph nodes.
Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer to Watch For
Although many symptoms of oral cancer are subtle, there are some signs to watch for that may indicate the need for an oral cancer screening:
- Sores and ulcers in the mouth that don’t heal for two weeks.
- Red and white patches in the mouth, on the tongue, or on the gums.
- Lumps, thickened tissue, or unusual changes in the mouth or throat.
- Pain, tenderness, or numbness in the mouth, neck or jaw.
- Trouble swallowing or chewing, or a feeling that something is stuck in your throat.
