Oral Pathology
Oral pathology is the specialty of dentistry and pathology, which deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions. In short, it is a science that investigates the causes, processes and effects of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations. As well as the management of patients.
In the United States, oral pathology is one of nine specialties that the American Dental Association and the federal government officially recognizes. This recognition provides oral pathology with its own national certifying board, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Oral pathologists operate biopsy services for dental and medical professionals. Many also operate clinical diagnosis and management clinics (clinical oral pathology) as well as radiograph consultation services.
Several national organizations of oral pathologists exist. In the U.S., the main national association is the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP). The AAOMP is also adopted by the American Dental Association.
